Articles: Foundations for Success

Inscape's success as a company is built upon the same philosophy we expound to our audiences, namely integrity, trust, hard work, excellent people skills, common sense, commitment and fairness.

Inscape's Suhan Mihcioglu is convinced that ultimately long term success depends on people. "Companies do not grow, only people develop and grow and, in turn, they grow companies. They make the difference, they provide that competitive edge, they are any company's most valuable asset and they will increase the value of your company."

However, lasting success can only be built upon a strong moral foundation. Applying this understanding to Inscape's training programmes was a logical next step. "Business success, including in knowledge and information based sectors, is not about technical information and training in areas such as customer service, sales, marketing, laws, taxes, performance measurement, business practices and policies first. It is about attitude and Emotional Intelligence (EQ). The others will help you make reasonable, incremental changes and improvements. But if you want to make significant, quantum improvement, you must work on paradigms through which you help create a voluntary positive change in attitude and behaviour - a new culture. You may need to consider a paradigm shift - a fundamental change in your approach and philosophy - in respect of your learning and development plans for your staff in order to increase productivity, performance and profitability."

Author John Gardner once said, “Most ailing organisations have developed a functional blindness to their own defects. They are not suffering because they cannot resolve their problems, but because they cannot see their problems.” Einstein put it this way: “The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them.”

Suhan comments: "What I learnt from a leading expert's comment on earthquakes was that 'earthquakes don't kill, weak foundations do!' We took that profound lesson and applied it to our understanding of success in professional and personal lives. Anything built to last must have a solid foundation. The foundation of personal and professional success lies in understanding the universal and timeless success principals, understanding ourselves and others, and realising the impact of attitude and personal behaviour on others. We must also understand that we can not separate individuals’ personal, family and business lives – it is a package. Yet, I have never been on a training course throughout my professional career before and with IBM which addressed my needs as a ‘whole person’ and covered success principals at work, at home and in my personal life. Therefore, we decided to specialise in learning and development programmes that focus on human nature and ‘The Whole-Person’ and facilitate the changes in thinking and behaviour that are required for organisations to achieve their business objectives. They have a direct and significant impact on the performance of teams and departments and ultimately to the bottom-line of your company."

"As an ex-IBMer", Suhan concludes, "I call our flagship Strategies for Success 3-day workshop ‘The Operating System for Learning and Development’ upon which all other training, knowledge and skills should be built!"
